Fall of Buddhism: the Islam angle

6 06 2007

“There can be no doubt that the fall of Buddhism in was due to the invasions of the Musalmans.”

“Such was the slaughter of the Buddhist priesthood perpetrated by the Islamic invaders. The axe was struck at the very root. For by killing the Buddhist priesthood Islam killed Buddhism. This was the greatest disaster that befell the religion of Buddha in India.”

N B :-There are many such instances in chapter-5 where Dr. Ambedkar holds that Islam wiped out Buddhism from India. Budhhists either fled or converted to Islam. But in the next two chapters he provides ample evidence that it was Brahminism which put Buddhism in death bed, Islam simply cut off the life support. Unfortunately the islam angle is quoted in isolation which completely misconstrues Dr. Ambedkar’s thesis.

Decline of Buddhism in India

It is necessary to make this distinction because the fall of Buddhism is one, the reasons for which are very different from those which brought about its downfall. For the fall is due to quite obvious causes while the reasons for its decline are not quite so obvious.

N B :-Dr. Ambedkar held brahminism responsible for “decline of Buddhism” and Islam for “fall” of it. According to him, Islamic invasion gave a death blow to the summer sapling of Buddhism already wilted under the heat of brahminical political and socio-cultural conspiracy.
